Nearly 40% of Louisianians are obese and at risk of significant health problems as we age. Modern medicine has developed a drug that could help. GLP-1s are amazing at controlling blood sugar in type 2 diabetics. And it’s not unusual for someone on these drugs to lose 10-20% of their body weight. This side effect means people who are not diabetic are now taking GLP-1s just to lose weight. And it works!
But there is a significant cost. On average, these brand-name GLP-1 drugs — like Ozempic®, Mounjaro® and Trulicity® — cost around $1,000 a month. The question, of course, is will Louisiana Blue pay for GLP-1s to treat only obesity in people without diabetes? Louisiana Blue Healthcare Economist Mike Bertaut explores that question in this Straight Talk video.
