Every single day that I work at Louisiana Blue (going on 21 years now), I’m reminded how different we are from every other health insurance company doing business in Louisiana. And these differences work in our members’ favor every single day.
Because we are a locally owned, locally operated, Louisiana-based, not-for-profit company, we can do some very special things other health insurance companies would never do:
- Like making Louisiana-based decisions, with Louisianians’ money, for Louisiana’s people.
- Like not sending your money to anonymous shareholders and bondholders all over the world.
And that’s just the beginning.
I’m always pleased when people outside our organization recognize and realize how special Louisiana Blue is, not just for our customers, providers and stakeholders, but for the 3,000-plus people who work here as well.
Careerminds, a global outplacement and hiring company that prides itself on finding the absolute best jobs for career-minded folks around the world, recently did a large survey in the United States. They asked employees and potential employees to tell them which companies they would like to work for, and which companies were the most admired in all 50 states. Some big-name companies that you’ve probably heard of topped the list of their answers in various states (think Google, Walmart, Toyota and the Mayo Clinic). When the survey got to Louisiana, I’m proud to say, Louisiana Blue topped the list of most admired and best companies to work for in our home state.
Why are we so proud of this? Well, happy employees tend to do a better job. Since our overhead is federally controlled, we have to keep our employees happy and still keep our compensation in line with other insurance companies. That can sometimes be challenging, since we can’t always use financial compensation to show our appreciation for our employees’ hard work.
Interestingly, there were only THREE states where the most-admired company to work for was a health insurance company. And yes, Louisiana was one of them. The other two were Iowa, with a fellow Blue Plan, and Connecticut, with Aetna CVS Health. To me, this reinforces just how different we are, not just on the outside, but on the inside as well.
Keep that in mind if you are graduating from college, or have a child or grandchild about to enter the work world – wouldn’t you like to keep them in Louisiana? For that to happen, they need solid companies with good professional opportunities, places where they feel like they can use their education and experience to do something meaningful.
We strive to be that type of work environment right here in Louisiana! I can testify to that, as I’m entering my 21st year with Louisiana Blue. I’m happy to say that we do live up to our mission of improving the health and lives of Louisianians, including our employees. Great benefits, wellness programs, paid time off to volunteer and hybrid workplaces are just some of things that help keep our employees happy. I’ve never worked anywhere with the quality of Louisiana Blue, even though I’ve been working since I was 16 years old.
Louisiana Blue also offers internship opportunities in the spring, summer and fall semesters. This is a great chance for college students who will soon be graduating and entering the workforce to see what working in healthcare or at a large company is really like.
The Straight Talk is, national employee placement companies (like Careerminds) and their clients love what we are doing here at Louisiana Blue. When you join us, you get a chance to make a real difference in people’s lives. We’re improving the health of all Louisianians and covering healthcare they could NEVER afford to pay for out of their own pockets.
